The Article by Popular Mechanics magazine “101 Gadgets that changed the World” highlights what we knew all along, it’s not our imagination, we really can’t live without these “smartphone” gadgets.
There is no doubt in my mind that iPhones and Androids are the wave of the future for the smartphone. The OS systems are getting better each day and our addiction to share everything can’t seem to end. We use our wireless devices for silly things such as “going into the restaurant now” and really helpful things like “had dinner at… and …” which later help businesses and as an entrepreneur who has a website, you have the advantage of getting  views from your postings or reviews with your smartphone and that way you can bring traffic to your website, by way of backlinks, so it can help customers, entrepreneurs, and businesses alike.

What other names do we have for the smartphone?

Whether you call it cell phone, iPhone, Smartphone, PDA (personal data/digital assistants), portable organizers, or even tabs or tablets, they are the best thing that happened to us since the invention of the refrigerator. Ok, maybe not that far but you get the idea.

The ‘Popular Mechanics’ panel whose task was to review and analyze several inventions to find 101 items and rate them by what fits the description of “gadgets” chose the Smartphone (iPhones and Droids) to be number 1.  Who would have thought 30 years ago that would be the case. When mobiles appeared in the market not many thought they would succeed, unlike TVs that everybody wanted one in their home, phones were seen as a luxury not affordable to the simple folk, today everyone has a smartphone.

Around the same time that mobile phones appeared the long distance companies were deregulated giving people a huge opportunity to take advantage of a very lucrative wealth trend opportunity in the telecommunications industry, particularly long distance business, thus many became millionaires. When Windows was announced, it was a funny name and we laughed, but who is laughing now? all the millionaires on the way to the bank, or should I say their MBAs – Master Bank Accounts.

Phones were originally intended for businesses and family to stay in touch wherever they were. With the evolution of the wireless and mobile devices more features were added to the phones as we knew it. We started playing games while waiting at a doctor’s office, we started texting short messages, we were able to take pictures and share them, and we even started to take video.  That’s old now, we want video, locate me, etc. things the smartphone can do.

The first office portable devices I can remember included the Palm Pilot, they had touch screen, software that allowed you to create, view, and read documents as if you were in a computer, address book, calendar, notes, and my favorite, a doodle pad that you could use to draw or hand write anything with a special screen pen. Later models could connect your email account to always stay in touch with the office. Fact is, these were awesome organizers and that’s what brought us today’s smartphones.

The industry and technological advances took it a step further, they thought of those folks who are not exactly in offices but need to stay connected, and the GPS (Global Positioning System) was added. Other great tools also increased access to the internet, making it very popular, the only hold back now may be that not too many websites are prepared to display their pages on mobile screens. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, and other similar big names on the internet have been working on ensuring that people can find the information they want anywhere they use their cell phones, PDAs, BlackBerrys, or portable devices. So we are a mobile world and the smartphone is the “corner stone.”
